The International Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago insurance man Melvin Jones - who wondered why his local business club could not expand its horizons from purely business concerns to the betterment of the community and the world at large.
Jones' idea struck a chord within his own group, the Business Circle of Chicago, and they authorized him to explore his concept with similar organizations from around the United States. His efforts resulted in an organizational meeting at a local hotel on June 7, 1917. The 12 men who gathered there voted the "Association of Lions Clubs" into existence, and issued a call for a national convention to be held in Dallas, Texas in October of the same year.

League City Lions Club
Thirty-six delegates representing 22 clubs from nine states heeded the call, approved the "Lions Clubs" designation, and elected Dr. William P. Woods of Indiana as their first president. Guiding force and founder Melvin Jones was named acting secretary. Thus began an association with Lionism that only ended with his death in 1961.
The first meeting of the League City Chapter of the Lions Club was called to order by president Phillip T. Wright at The League City Coffee Shop at 7:00pm on April 10, 1952. Twenty-two members were in attendance.

Texas Lions Camp is a residential camping facility for children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer.
Sight First
SightFirst grants fight preventable and reversible blindness by building hospitals and clinics, training doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease. Lions’ districts work with their regional SightFirst technical advisor in developing SightFirst grant applications and project proposals.
Leader Dogs for the Blind
Founded in 1939, provides leader dogs for the blind at little or no cost.
Lions Eyebank of Texas
Collecting, processing and distributing human ocular tissue transplants.
Lions Club International Foundation
Established in 1952. Children and adult vision improvement and services for the blind.

The Devereux Texas Treatment Network is devoted to supporting the mission of Devereux by enhancing the
lives of its children, adults & families.
Butler Longhorn Museum
The Butler Longhorn Museum in League City, Texas, is a unique cultural attraction for tourists, displaying western art, music, Longhorn artifacts and Texas historical items. This Longhorn Museum will be the first of its kind and is expected to be included in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s largest Longhorn history collec-
tion.
Interfaith Caring Ministries
Interfaith Caring Ministries was founded in 1985 by a group of citizens and local area churches concerned with the areas growing population of working poor families. They recognized a need for an alliance that would allow them to screen clients for need and offer services on a consistent basis. Since then, Interfaith Caring Ministries has been a cornerstone in helping to fill in gaps within government social service, health, and education. There are over 25,000 working poor families in ICM’s service area. In 2007, ICM served over 4,000 families.

Through all of our 120 year history, the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area has been a place where people can find hope, fellowship and healing. The YMCA has always stayed true to its mission, values and purpose of helping persons grow in spirit, mind and body. With 38 centers and over 300 program locations serving eleven counties, the
YMCA of the Greater Houston Area is helping to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
